BA Literary Writing

The BA programme in Literary Writing at the Swiss Literature Institute is the only programme in Switzerland allowing young writers to develop their writing practice at university level. Each year 15 students are accepted to start the three-year programme, offered in both French and German - some courses and seminars are bilingual, but the writing is usually done in the mother tongue (students with sufficient abilities in the neighbouring language are encouraged to also write in this language).

The core of the studies is the students` own text production. The students write texts, discuss them and rewrite them in different writing studios and under the supervision of a mentor (all genres are possible). In the third year, students write not only a theoretical piece of work, but also their Bachelor thesis. This is a long, complete piece of literary writing. The diploma texts will be presented in a public reading at the end of June and excerpts will be published. The studies lead to the title Bachelor in Literary Writing and qualify graduates to apply for related Master`s programmes at a University of Applied Sciences.

  • Three years of full-time study (in German/French), start of studies: only in the Autumn Semester
  • Focus: independent text production
  • 15 students per year

Perspectives

The title Bachelor of Arts in Literary Writing allows independent work as an author e.g. in writing for the theatre, prose, poetry, new media, spoken wo etc. Specialisations in the fields of literary education and literary translation are also possible. The title also qualifies one for further master-level study.

Aside from the independent creation of literary texts, the degree programme in Literary Writing makes various activities in the literary, communication and cultural sectors possible. Some examples are: lectorship; organisation and/or hosting of literary events; editing for newspapers, radio or television; translation; dramaturgy etc. Students develop the methods and intellectual capacity needed to meet the requirements of independent artistic work and the profesional literary world.

The education in literary writing can be continued and developed within the framework of the Master of Arts in Contemporary Arts Practice.
