Admissions Procedure
The admissions procedure to the Bachelor studies takes place in two steps: the preliminary test (1st round) and the aptitude test (2nd round).
Preliminary Test (1st round)
The preliminary test is free of charge and aims to determine basic acting talent. This part of the admissions procedure takes about half a day.
The following have to be prepared for the preliminary test:
- a short monologue from antique or classical literature
- a short monologue from modern dramatic literature (20th century onwards)
- a short monologue of the applicant`s choice or a scene/presentation the applicant developed him-/herself
- a short song
- a poem
Note: Your personal interest in a character is essential when choosing your part. We recommend reading the whole play, in order to study the part as thoroughly as possible.
If you passed an exam at the BUA or at another public drama school in the last 18 months, or took the “Vorkurs Theater“ at the BUA, you don`t have to take the preliminary test and can apply directly for the aptitude test (2nd round).
Aptitude Test (2nd round)
The aptitude test determines if an applicant is admitted to the studies or not. It takes 2 days and consists of a practical examination and an interview. Participation in this round is subject to an application fee (CHF 100.00) and a fee for the aptitude test (CHF 150.00).
In the aptitude test, competencies in the fields body, speaking/voice, acting, conceptual thought and self-management are assessed.
- Practical part
The foundation of this examination are the monologues, respectively the self-devised presentation, the song and poem, as prepared for the preliminary test (see above). The jury of the preliminary test may set further tasks for the aptitude test. - Interview
The interview is based on the motivational statement (see Application) and on the practical examination. Important elements of the interview are the applicant`s motivation, previous experience in the field of theatre, ideas about the profession and the ability to reflect on theatre.
