Criteria for studying at Bern University of the Arts
Criteria for studying at the University of the Arts vary. Conditions for admission are determined by previous education and field of study.
You can obtain individual and specific information from each department and the contact person for the corresponding course.
Bachelor
The basic criteria for entry to a Bachelor course are as follows:
University entrance diploma
As a holder of a federally recognised university entrance diploma you can be admitted to a Bachelor course at Bern University of the Arts. For certain studies you need one year’s experience in an area of work related to the study specialisation.
Vocational baccalaureate diploma
You have learned the fundamentals of a trade or profession related to the study specialisation and have a federally recognised vocational baccalaureate diploma.
Specialist ‘matura’ / vocational middle school certificate
You have obtained a specialist ‘matura’ in a vocational area corresponding to the study specialisation. Otherwise, you have a specialist ‘matura’ / a vocational middle school diploma in another vocational area and have practical and theoretical knowledge acquired in a trade or profession related to the study specialisation.
Equivalent previous education
Your previous education or experience is recognised as equivalent to the ‘matura’ or you have passed an entrance examination corresponding to the vocational baccalaureate diploma.
Higher vocational training
As someone who has completed non-university educational courses at tertiary level, you can be admitted to a Bachelor course in line with your proven knowledge and the acceptance criteria for the course.
Previous education abroad
If you are an applicant with foreign qualifications, you are required to submit a number of documents and to have sufficient knowledge of languages. You are advised to find out from the study specialisation office what the procedure is and which documents need to be submitted.
Master
Bern University of the Arts offers various Master courses that build on the Bachelor courses.
The consecutive Master courses are aimed at Bachelor graduates with above-average grades. The criterion for admission to Master level is a Bachelor degree or equivalent higher education qualification.
Each Master course has its own procedure, aptitude assessment and criteria for admission. You are advised to find out from the study specialisation office what the specific conditions are.
