Perspectives

Graduates of the MA in Art Education often have several mainstays: with the supplementary courses in pedagogy they can teach at Gymnasium level or at tertiary level.

Many fields of activity open to them lie outside the school system. Graduates may become established in the growing cultural industry as communicators, whether as curators or studio directors, in art and museum education, exhibition design, in the new media or in art education in the broadest sense. They are able to initiate, conceive of, organise and realise courses, projects, events etc. They can fill responsible positions in project management or work in public relations in the cultural sector and other related fields. Some continue their academic activity and enter research. Some work as artists and designers.

Degree

Students graduate with a Master of Arts in Art Education, with or without teaching certificate Sek II.

The Master’s degree in Art Education qualifies graduates for a teaching career in art and design, or to enter an advanced PhD programme. Supplemented by the pedagogic degree at the Pädagogische Hochschule Bern it entitles graduates to teach visual design at Gymnasium and secondary level.

Projects

Research

The Master in Art Education participates in projects in the four Research Areas of the BUA, above all in the areas Communication Design (research fields Knowledge Visualisation, Social Communication and Design and Rhetoric) and Interpretation Research. It participates in the research of the Institut für Kunstgeschichte at the University of Bern (Curatorial Studies) and the Pädagogische Hochschule Bern (Media Education, Media Skills, Visual Literacy). It also participates in developing emergent research activities in art education, as an active member of the network of universities of art and design in German-speaking Switzerland.

Research field Art Education (German)

Master’s students participate actively in work packages for existing research projects. Due to the strong academic component of the degree, students and graduates are particularly qualified to work as research assistants in projects and to initiate projects themselves. In the long term, the BUA aims to introduce a PhD or EdD (Educational Doctorate) programme together with other Swiss providers.
