MA Specialized Music Performance (Classical Music/Opera)

The Master’s degree in Specialized Music Performance corresponds to the highest educational qualification level in classical music and opera. The course provides intensely individualised training to help students with above average talent reach the top international level.

To this end, the course engages with the entire stylistic range of music and musical theatre. Close cooperation with orchestras and theatres ensures proximity to artistic practice. Students regularly have opportunities to perform and prepare for careers as soloists on the national and international stage.

Perspectives

The professional sector for soloists has changed markedly in recent years. The international competition is fierce and steady employment in ensembles has become rare. The classical subsidy culture, with correspondingly large orchestras and ensembles, is shifting towards smaller events, festivals, special formations, independent productions and structures. The breadth of the field of activity and the choice of possibilities depends strongly on the initiative and determination of the individual musician.

The Studies prepare graduates to work as artists on national and international stages as well as in the opera. The Opera Department is unique in Switzerland. The Biel Opera Studio is the Swiss competency centre for opera training at the SMP level (Specialized Music Performance) and cooperates as such with the music departments at other universities in Switzerland.

Degree

Students graduate with a Master of Arts in Specialized Music Performance. The degree certificate also specifies the Major (Instrument/Voice or Opera).

The Master’s degree in Specialized Music Performance is the highest degree that can be attained in Music and enables graduates to pursue soloist careers.
