Postgraduate Studies in Music Management

Since 2005, the Bern University of the Arts is offering new postgraduate programmes designed for working people. They result in a Master of Advanced Studies diploma. This unique form of education is bilingual (German/French) and structured on a modular basis. You can choose between full postgraduate programmes or individual modules (CAS - Certificate of Advanced Studies).

The degree course in "Music School Management" that was previously offered by HERZKA/VMS is now being continued at the BUA. This revamped, expanded and bilingual education is divided up into postgraduate CAS courses and leads to an MAS diploma in Music Management. The former HERZKA/VMS courses have thus now been integrated into the Universities of Applied Science at postgraduate level. These module-based postgraduate studies have a particular bearing on the professional field in question; this is achieved through case and context studies, internships and above all project work.

This postgraduate education is aimed at those in charge of music institutions and all those who wish to give their performances that professional edge – including bands, ensembles, choirs, clubs and orchestras.

Change processes and change management form the basis of all the courses and continuously flow into the tuition. This arises from the conviction that our society is currently undergoing a massive process of change and restructuring, which is set to last for several years and is having a particular impact on the education sector. The course thus analyses the individual student's environment and associated networks, and places great value on having students define their own positions and (on the basis of these positions) drafting projects, strategies and visions.
