Registering with the Swiss Authorities

Foreign students have to register with their residential municipality (Einwohnerdienste, Einwohnerkontrolle or Fremdenpolizei) within the first 8 days after their arrival in Switzerland and to apply for a residence permit there.

If you have another place of residence, contact the registration office (Einwohnerdienste/Einwohnerkontrolle) in the Swiss municipality in question.

 

The following documents have to be presented when registering: 

ERASMUS students

  • Copy of Travel documents (passport or ID)
  • Confirmation of admission to the studies
  • Residential address for the time of studies (rental contract) 
  • ERASMUS students, who are nationals of a country outside the EU/EFTA (third countries): residence permit from the EU/EFTA country, where they are studying 

 

Note: Since the autumn semester 2012, ERASMUS students no longer have to give proof of sufficient financial means.

 

ERASMUS students in Bern 

Students taking up residence in Bern must register with the authorities BY POST and not personally within 8 days. The documents listed above must be sent in along with form for ERASMUS students.

  • Residential address for the time of studies (if possible: rental contract)
  • 2 passport photos

 


who are nationals of a country outside the EU/EFTA (third countries), such as Rumania or Bulgaria: 


  • Passport with visa
  • Students with a nationality that means they do not require a visa (such as Rumania and Bulgaria): passport and assurance of the residence permit 
  • Confirmation of admission to the studies (can be requested at the International Office.) 
  • Proof of sufficient financial means (at least CHF 18'000 per year) *. Evidence of financial means (PDF)
  • Residential address for the time of studies (if possible: rental contract)
  • 2 passport photos

 

* To get the residence permit, you have to prove that you have sufficient means to finance your stay in Switzerland (at least CHF 1500 per month). To do so, you can present a bank statement of your bank account registered in your name, which is authorized by the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA), a confirmation letter by a Swiss who is financially supporting you or a confirmation of a scholarship.
