Composition for Wind Orchestras and Brass Bands

The BUA major in Wind Music and Brass Band Composition is unique in Europe.  It enables composers to re-think the genre of wind music in different contexts and areas of application and to respond to performers’ varying technical and musical skills.  It also fosters their development of a differentiated compositional craft and a personal musical vision and language which has social resonance and transcends mere Gebrauchsmusik.  The degree programme teaches the historical background of the work and sensitises students to current social and cultural developments. At the same time, the major is embedded in the wider context of contemporary composition, especially related to the other BUA majors in composition, new music performance, teaching and research.  Students’ work is tested in practice and discussed.  Students also gain experience in learning pieces, rehearsing, conducting and other practice-related activities.
