Situation
The project investigates how socio-economic, regulatory and environmental factors have shaped rural life and the culture of agricultural buildings on the Swiss Plateau throughout the 20th century. The research focuses on the historical transformation of farm buildings, with particular attention to the effects of public policies, regulatory frameworks and market dynamics on their evolution. The aim is to develop forward-looking strategies to adapt agricultural infrastructure to current and future challenges, particularly in relation to food security, climate change and the energy transition. Indeed the Swiss Plateau, the country’s agricultural heartland, currently faces significant pressures from climate change and the need to preserve farmland amid growing urbanisation. By developing sustainable adaptation strategies for agricultural buildings, the project addresses these tensions. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, it draws on insights from architecture, socio-economics, and spatial planning. The findings are intended to benefit agricultural professionals, spatial planners, and policymakers, thereby making a significant contribution to Switzerland's ecological and social transition.
