Interview: Three questions for Zijun Meng
Why are you studying opera?
Opera touches me deeply – every time I experience it, I feel a unique power of emotions. That is why I want to learn to master this art form myself and move people in the same way.
What was your first encounter with opera?
Even as a child, I watched opera broadcasts on television, but my first visit to the opera house was overwhelming – the sound of the orchestra, the voices and emotions of the singers touched my heart.
Which is your favourite opera and why?
I have had a favourite opera in every phase of my life – currently, it is Puccini's Madame Butterfly. Her story touches me particularly deeply: perhaps because we share the same Asian background, I understand her decision, even though I would not make it myself.
