Interview: Three questions for Roberto Santos Luy
Why are you studying opera?
I study opera because I am convinced that we can address present-day social issues through the beauty of music and the power of the performing arts. After all, the arts are ultimately a means of expression.
What was your first encounter with opera?
My first encounter with opera was when I was around 10 years old and my mom took me to watch a performance at the local theater of La Traviata. I was captivated by the sounds, the colors, the movement. Even though I didn’t understand the story because of how young I was, the whole production left a big impression on me.
Which is your favourite opera and why?
Madame Butterfly by Giacomo Puccini is one of my all-time favorites. The soprano role (Cio-cio san) is so tragically beautiful, that makes my blood run cold. Also, Puccini’s music is stunningly beautiful as well.
