Interview: Three questions for Imogen Baker
Why are you studying opera?
Opera continues to captivate me as a multifaceted art form. It seamlessly blends technical vocal artistry, stunning visual elements, and a deep exploration of its subject matter. What I find particularly fascinating is opera's unique ability to be both lighthearted and profoundly meaningful, often within the same work. As I advance in my studies, I'm eager to delve deeper into these aspects and further refine my understanding and appreciation of this rich artistic tradition.
What was your first encounter with opera?
My first experience with opera was watching the Welsh National Opera's touring production of The Magic Flute. The storytelling immediately drew me in, and I was amazed by how the music and visuals worked together to bring the tale to life. The Queen of the Night's aria left a lasting impression on me – I'd never heard anything like those high notes and fast-paced vocal runs before. It opened my eyes to just how demanding and impressive opera singing could be.
Which is your favourite opera and why?
My favorite opera is La Traviata by Verdi. I've seen it performed several times, in both traditional and modern productions. Each time, it manages to impress me with its spectacle while also moving me with its emotional depth. The story's exploration of love, sacrifice, and societal expectations always resonates, regardless of how it's staged. There's something special about La Traviata that keeps me coming back for more.
