Interview: Three questions for Dario Lupi
Why are you studying opera?
I love telling stories and using them to touch people emotionally and make them think. In my opera studies, I am learning how to express emotions through my voice, music and convincing performance, thereby inspiring people to question themselves and social structures – and thus perhaps making a small contribution to a better world.
What was your first encounter with opera?
My first encounter with opera was Le Nozze di Figaro at the Lucerne Theatre. I was particularly fascinated by Vlad Tlushch as Conte Almaviva – how he filled the entire hall with nothing but his voice and captivated the entire audience. That's when I knew: I want to be able to do that too!
Which is your favourite opera and why?
For me, Viktor Ullman's Der Kaiser von Atlantis is an almost perfect opera. It has great historical and social depth, is musically fascinating and leaves the audience pensive. What's more, every time you watch it, you discover another facet that you hadn't noticed before. The only downside is that it's over after just an hour.
