Interview: Three questions for Giulia Ferraldeschi

Why are you studying opera?

I'm studying opera because it’s where my musical journey has naturally led me. Growing up in Rome, surrounded by history, I started with medieval music, and the passion grew. Opera is where I can express the emotions I’ve carried with me since childhood – it feels like home, but on a grander stage.

What was your first encounter with opera?

My first encounter with opera was anything but traditional. Music wasn’t really a big thing in my family, but one day I saw a Barbie cartoon where a character eats a berry and suddenly belts out The Queen of the Night. I was hooked. After that, I’d gather my family in the living room, climb up on a chair, and make them listen to me hit those high notes – over and over again!

Which is your favourite opera and why?

Le Nozze di Figaro is truly a masterpiece, and “la mia Susannetta” has always felt like “my” character. She’s clever, mischievous, and full of life – someone who drives the plot but also brings a warmth that’s both human and timeless. The way Mozart infuses sensuality and humor into every interaction is genius. For me, Susanna represents the heart of the opera – her voice, her wit, her spirit. Every time I study the score, I find new layers to her that remind me why I fell in love with opera in the first place.
