Interview: Three questions for Chloé Underwood

Why are you studying opera?

Studying opera will offer me the opportunity to collaborate closely with a wide variety of artists and like-minded musicians. I love working with people to bring stories to life on stage, and I’m passionate about the creative process from shaping a character to immersing myself fully into their world. Opera allows me to combine storytelling, emotion and artistry in a way that feels deeply fulfilling and I know that studying Opera will only help further shape me into the musician that I want to present to the world.

What was your first encounter with opera?

My first encounter with opera came when I was only 3 years old (I’m told...) when I wouldn’t let my grandparents turn the tv off without crying as I was mesmerised by the sound that these singers were making! But my first memorable encounter was at the Royal Opera House in London watching Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci, I was totally besotted by every aspect of it, not only the incredible singing but the acting, staging, set and costumes. I knew that I wanted to be on a stage in whatever capacity that may be but witnessing what that cast and orchestra did with the incredible score is a moment I will never forget.

Which is your favourite opera and why?

It would have to be Il Barbiere di Siviglia by Rossini. Whatever mood I am in it never fails to put a smile on my face and all the characters have such amazing, detailed traits to them. Rossini has a way of keeping people entertained and making the audience member forget about their own day to day stresses.
