What you will gain with your degree

You will study alongside around 140 other undergraduate students from Switzerland and around the world. Through orchestra and chamber music projects, you will broaden your stylistic horizons.

You will develop your artistic and interpretative perspectives and will be able to justify them theoretically. As part of interdisciplinary projects, you will collaborate actively with others, reflect on your artistic practice, and have opportunities to experiment. The Bachelor’s degree prepares you for subsequent Master’s studies.

Core Subject

Design your studies according to your interests. At the centre of your degree programme is your core subject.

In the core subject Composition, you will learn the craft of composition and develop your own musical language.

In the core subject Voice, we offer various courses that help you unlock your vocal potential and develop your skills as a singer.

The specialisation in Instrumental Performance is designed to refine your skills on your chosen instrument and deepen your musical understanding.

Partners + exchanges

HKB maintains close ties to a number of partner universities, both in Switzerland and abroad, and collaborates with international partners on numerous projects. HKB is also a member of several international networks.

Highly gifted students in the Talent Development programme have the opportunity to begin part of their undergraduate studies early with our lecturers.

HKB students have the opportunity to complete part of their studies or work experience abroad. In turn, interested persons from abroad can apply to study at HKB or spend part of their studies here.

Combining Theory and Practice in Research Projects

Teaching, practice and research are closely linked at our institution. The practical research conducted at the HKB explores important cultural, technological and social issues. Research takes place in four institutes:

Career Prospects

With a Bachelor of Arts in Classical Music, you lay the foundation for your career in music.

In a subsequent Master’s programme at the HKB, you can further develop your skills in performance, pedagogy, or composition.

Ready for a challenge?

The Bachelor’s degree is designed as a stepping stone to a Master’s programme. It prepares you for a range of activities but does not immediately qualify you for a profession. Graduates without a Master’s degree can apply their skills in music-related fields such as music journalism, music management, or music retail.

Our graduates work in the following fields as:

  • Freelance musicians

  • Chamber musicians

  • Soloists

  • Orchestra musicians

  • Music journalists

  • Music managers

  • Music retailers

  • Arts/cultural managers

Duration + Content

The full-time Bachelor of Arts Classical Music takes 3 years (6 semesters) to complete. The languages of instruction are German and French.

Full-time or part-time?

Full-time Degree

The course comprises 180 ECTS credits. You study full-time and complete your studies after six semesters with your Bachelor’s thesis.

Part-time Degree

In justified exceptional cases, you have the opportunity to study part-time. If you have further questions, please contact the Head of Degree Programme.

Programme Schedule

You will benefit from an individual study plan that reflects your strengths, needs and ambitions. Over the course of the Bachelor’s programme, you will spend a lot of time performing and appearing on stage. In the first two years, the focus is on laying the foundations, while the third year is more strongly geared towards your personal specialisation and the preparation for your Bachelor’s thesis.

Programme Modules

This study programme imparts fundamental musical-artistic competencies through theoretical and practical modules and is organised into the following thematic and methodological module groups:

In the core subject (Instrument, Voice, or Composition), you will receive individual tuition and personalised support. The core subject forms the centre of the programme. We assume a daily workload of at least four hours of practice time.

You will deepen your reflective and analytical skills, enabling you to develop your own artistic perspective. You will understand your musical work within a broader historical and social context. Initial exposure to music research is also included.

Elective modules allow you to shape your studies according to your interest and needs. The diverse range of options includes research projects, lectures at the University of Bern, as well as courses in mental training or laboratories with live electronics.

As part of the transdisciplinary Y-modules, you broaden your horizons by exploring other artistic fields such as literature, theatre, visual arts, and design. You collaborate with students from different disciplines and guest lecturers, who focus on a new theme each year.

You will gain targeted insights into the advanced Master’s programmes in which you can specialise after completing your Bachelor’s degree. This provides an opportunity to engage with students, lecturers, and programme directors.

The programme concludes with the Bachelor’s thesis, which consists of a recital and a written paper. The recital programme is developed in collaboration with your mentors, as is the written paper, for which you choose the topic. The Bachelor’s thesis represents a synthesis of the competencies you have acquired in artistic practice, theory, and independent creative work.
