Impracticality

Alexia Martin.

Inspired by Katarina camprani’s work series "the uncomfortable" This video materialised in the context of the course "Laughter as a possible socia code - inelasticity and redemption" with Sasa Karalic.

In this video, a character is shown attempting to fulfill trivial tasks such as eating or reading a book, but restrained by the designed impracticality of the chairs displayed.

This video work explores the a reality where we conform to situations of discomfort, choosing to compromise to the easiest option rather than seeking for a healthier or better alternative - which arguably, is not toodifferent from certain aspects of our own societies and traditional routines. This idea is magnified and exaggerated by objects that are humouristic by nature, and impractical by design.

This work also approaches the topic of humour in a distant and static manner – showing how simple, personal and random it can be. Some people are more prone to laugh at a sound, while others, at an image. And if your friends decide something’s funny, will you laugh too?

Humour has always been a cryptic matter to me, and laughter even more so.

What are the things that shape your humour, do you need to laugh at the same things as someone else in order to get along?

The funniest things, in my opinion, are the ones that aren’t meant to be.
